Theater and Concert Hall "Victoria" ( China 维多利亚 剧院 及 音乐会 堂) is a complex of two buildings and a clock tower , united by a common corridor, located in a public area of Singapore .
Theater "Victoria" was built in 1862, it staged amateur performances and operettas. In 1905, the Victoria Memorial Hall was attached to it. Part of the funds for the construction (340,000 Singapore dollars ) were private donations. In 1980, the hall was transferred to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
In 1919 - the centenary of the founding of Singapore - a bronze monument was placed in front of the Memorial Hall to Sir Stamford Raffles , transferred from the promenade in the Padang area. A copy of this monument is installed at the site of the first landing of the founder of Singapore.
During the Second World War, the theater building was turned into a hospital. Chimes at this time showed Japanese time, and after the surrender of Japan, they kept criminals here.
The Victoria Theater and Concert Hall was included in the list of Monuments of National Importance on February 14, 1992 .
In the summer of 2010, the Victoria Theater and Concert Hall was closed for major repairs, which lasted until 2014. Repair, the cost of which is estimated at $ 180 million, has not changed the appearance of the complex. The builders not only preserved the facade of the building, but also restored some elements belonging to the original structure of 1905 [1] .
