About the magazine
John Grimek - One of the greatest bodybuilders in the world and weightlifters of the 1930s and 1940s - has been the editor of the magazine since 1964. After the death of Hoffman in 1985, the magazine was owned for some time by his associate and like-minded John Terpak, during which the publication continued to be a mirror of the weightlifting world.
In 1986, the company "Twinlab" acquired the Advanced Research Press publishing house, which published the Muscular Development magazine and several other publications on bodybuilding , fitness and a healthy lifestyle .
Twinlab Corporation, founded in 1968 , was named after the twin sons of its owner, businessman and pharmaceutical seller, David Blackman. One of the company's first products was a liquid protein supplement, which became very popular among Americans in the late 1960s. Most likely, this product success was due to the development of Robert Lynn's new low-protein diet called "Last Chance."
People’s interest in bodybuilding and powerlifting - the "children" of weightlifting - was growing more and more, and Joe Vader proclaimed his famous slogan: "Bodybuilding is important for building a healthy nation." The authorities of the sport were initially skeptical of bodybuilding, but the rapidly developing sports science stated that weight training should necessarily become part of the training process in any sport. The culture of body building in all its aspects has since remained the main theme of the journal.
At first, these were the widely known comic books “Max Rep: Mr. Astrotitan 2206 " Illustrator Lyman Dalli in the 90s. “Rep Max” was popular on the cover with Sandy Riddell from January 1991 until he and Quadra Bleu appeared together on the cover of a fully-illustrated magazine in November 1993, then on a poster. After the sale of Blechman magazine, he turned to more "malicious" bodybuilding, moving away from fitness.
David Blackman left Twinlab in 1996, which was led by one of his five children, Ross Blackman, while the rest of the brothers held leading positions in the company. The Advanced Research Press and the Muscular Development magazine were transferred to Steve Blackman in 2001 , professional bodybuilder, former vice president of Twinlab for 25 years.
