The list of the largest companies in Kazakhstan according to Expert RA Kazakhstan

The list of the largest companies in Kazakhstan (Expert-200-Kazakhstan) is compiled by the Expert RA Kazakhstan rating agency in accordance with the methodology for compiling the Russian Expert-400 rating, but taking into account the specifics and legislative features of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

An indicator characterizing the volume of sales of products (works, services) for the year was adopted as the main criterion for compiling the rating. In cases where, due to the specifics of the activities of companies, this indicator cannot be applied (for example, for banks, insurance companies), financial reporting data that is closest to it in economic sense is used. Published in the journal Expert Kazakhstan .

The first rating was published in November 2009, it contained data from the 100 largest Kazakhstani companies for 2008, the last pre-crisis year.

Since 2013, the rating has included 200 leading companies in Kazakhstan. The companies of the “new economy”, businesses founded in the post-Soviet period, go through a dedicated list.

2012 List

According to the results of 2012, the sales volume of the 200 largest companies in Kazakhstan reached 22.3 trillion tenge ($ 149.6 billion), having increased by 6% compared to the previous year - this result looks rather weak against the background of more than thirty percent recorded by the previous rating. If we take into account that annual inflation in 2012 was also 6%, then we can reasonably talk about stagnation of the domestic economy. The reason for the inhibition is a sharp slowdown in the dynamics of the revenues of oil and gas production, as well as metallurgy (see table 1 and graph 1). Against the backdrop of stagnation in export-oriented sectors, indicators in sectors related to satisfying consumer demand contrast: according to the Ministry of Economy and Budget Planning, growth was observed in trade (14.6%), catering (11.2%), information and communications (20, 5%), financial and insurance activities (11.7%).

2011 Results List

The arithmetic indicators of the fourth national rating of large Kazakhstani businesses look very optimistic: the total revenue of the top 100 Kazakhstani companies in 2011 increased to 19,979 billion tenge (136.3 billion dollars), an increase of 30% compared with 2010 . This, of course, is not the almost 50% that the previous rating showed, but it must be borne in mind that the stunning growth recorded by the results of the year before last was largely due to recovery from the crisis recession. Now, as the low base effect fades, the main locomotive of growth has become the favorable environment for world commodity prices for our export-oriented economy — primarily oil, gas and metals. Largely due to this very factor, the ratio of the revenue of the first hundred Kazakhstani companies to GDP for the year increased from 60 to 72%.

2010 Results List

According to the results of 2010, the third national rating of Kazakhstan’s large business recorded the way out of the economy from the deep phase of the crisis - and now it’s already obvious that this stage of the economic history was passed without significant losses. In 2009, the revenue growth dynamics of hundreds of the largest companies again became positive, and the growth rate, starting from 2007 , is consistent with the status of “one of the three fastest growing economies in the world” (according to Ernst & Young ).
