Biography

Al-Mubarrad was born in Basra in 826 . He studied with the most prominent scientists of that time in his hometown and in Kufa . His long-standing controversy with the "envious" of Kufa - Tallab - resulted in the traditional rivalry between the Basrian and Kufi grammar schools.

Most of the writings of al-Mubarrada are related to the heritage of the famous Sibaveihi . Critical remarks about the " Book " of Sibaveihi were mostly unfounded, and al-Mubarrad himself said:

None of the sciences have such a book. Whoever owns it can do without other [grammatical] works.

- Flugel Die grammatischen Schulen, s. 94—95

Thanks to the exemplary scientific apparatus in the form of an extensive library and staff of secretaries, al-Mubarrad was able to attract a huge mass of philological material for his works. Al-Mubarrad died, surrounded by universal honor in the year 898 in Baghdad .

Bibliography

The main work of al-Mubarrada is the book about the classical Arabic language “ al-Kamil ” (“Full”), which was often quoted and commented on by late grammatists. Being an outstanding achievement of Arabic philology, it contains flaws typical for the authors of that period - the book does not pay attention to the systematic presentation of the material and it contains a jumble of proverbs, short stories, poems, etc. At the beginning of one of the chapters, al-Mubarrad writes:

In this chapter, we mention a little of everything, in order to protect the reader from boredom with a quick change and to mix some serious jokes with the serious, while giving the soul and heart the opportunity to rest.
