History
In 1804, industrialist John Astor bought a large plot of land in lower Manhattan. In 1825, a street was laid through it, which was a boulevard 100 feet wide (about 30 meters). It originates from Astor Place and ends with Great Jones Street [1] [2] . The street was named Lafayette Place ( English Lafayette Place ) in honor of Gilbert Lafayette , who took an active part in the War of Independence [3] . Sites on both sides of the street were quickly sold out for an amount significantly exceeding their original cost [4] . In 1833, a number of neo - Greek houses were built on the western side of the street. Today they are known as the Colonnade Row and are listed on the US National Register of Historic Places .
Summer Streets
In 2008, the New York City Department of Transportation closed Lafayette Street for car traffic on three Saturdays as part of the Summer Streets program. This program was resumed in 2009. Since 2013, the program has been adopted on an ongoing basis. Closing takes place on the first, second and third Saturdays of every August [5] .
