Biography
Born in 1883 in Prague, into a German-speaking Jewish family owning bookstores in the city center. He was educated first in Prague and then in Munich gymnasium (after the family moved to Munich ).
He graduated from the University of Munich Ludwig-Maximilian , defending his doctoral dissertation in 1908. After that, Berwald received an invitation to work as an assistant to the German mathematician Heinrich Burkhardt ( German Heinrich Burkhardt ), which he could not use due to health problems. A few years later he became a lecturer at the German University in Prague ( Karl-Ferdinands-Universität ), where he first received the position of extraordinary professor (1922) and two years later - full professor. In 1929 he became the head of the mathematical faculty of this university, replacing the retired George Peak at this place.
In October 1941, Ludwig Berwald, together with his wife Hedwig, was transferred to the одódз ghetto , where Hedwig died on March 27, 1942, and Ludwig on April 20 of the same year.
