Biography

Maria Gonzaga was born on July 29, 1609 in Mantua. She was the eldest daughter and only surviving child in the family of Francesco IV Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua and Monferrato and Margarita of Savoy , daughter of Carlo Emanuele I , Duke of Savoy.

Maria Gonzaga was three years old when in 1612 the Duke of Francesco IV died at the age of twenty-six. The duchy of Monferrato departed to her. Ferdinando I of Mantua entrusted the niece to the cares of the nuns in the monastery of Saint Ursula in Mantua. [one]

Maria Gonzaga married Carlo Gonzaga , Duke of Nevers and Rethel . After the death of her two uncles, her father-in-law, Carlo I Gonzaga, a representative of the lateral branch of the clan, received the duchy of Mantua . Widowed in 1631. After the death of his father-in-law in 1637, she became regent with her underage son.

Maria Gonzaga was able to restore the feud , ravaged in 1630 by the army of the Holy Roman Empire. Having maintained friendly relations with France , she established friendly relations with the empire and with Spain , in which her aunt, the Dowager Empress Eleanor of Mantua , helped her.

With the direct participation of Maria Gonzaga, dynastic marriages of her children were concluded - in 1649, a son with Isabella Clara von Habsburg , daughter of Archduke Leopold V of Austria and granddaughter of Emperor Ferdinand II , and in 1651, daughter with Emperor Ferdinand III .

Maria Gonzaga was the initiator of many reforms that restored the economy of the duchy and stimulated population growth. In 1647, passing the reins of power over Mantua to her son, she retired to the favorite Favorite , where she died on August 14, 1660. [2]
