Chapel of St. George - an Orthodox chapel in the village of Neiden ( Sør-Varanger , Northern Norway ).

According to legend, it was erected in 1565 by the Monk Tryphon of Pechenga (1495-1583), revered by the Russian Orthodox Church as the "Enlightener of the Lapps". Consecrated on June 24 of that year [1] . The chapel is an important religious building for the Colts and is protected as a Sami heritage.

Chapel of St. George is the smallest religious building in Norway, with internal dimensions of 3.55 by 3.25 m.

The dendrochronological method showed that the wood of the walls of the chapel is no more than 200 years old. It is possible that the current building replaced the old chapel in almost the same style.

Around the chapel was a churchyard (cemetery) , which was not used for burial from the beginning of the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century . Excavations were carried out in 1915 in the oldest part of the cemetery, and many skeletons and skulls were sent to the Anatomical Institute of the University of Oslo , where they have since been stored.
