Biography
Petr Karachev was born on February 8, 1922 in the village of Uberi (now - Uninsky district of the Kirov region ). Since 1933, he lived on the farm Protchka Krasnoarmeysky district of Krasnodar Territory . He graduated from the four classes, after which he worked in the parental farm, then a shepherd, a tractor driver on a collective farm . In September 1941, Karachev was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He took part in battles on the Bryansk and Central Fronts. By September 1943, Sergeant Peter Karachev commanded the mortar crew of the 1035th rifle regiment of the 280th rifle division of the 60th Army of the Central Front. He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Sumy and Chernihiv regions of the Ukrainian SSR and the battle for the Dnieper [1] .
On September 8 - 10, 1943, during the battle for Konotop, the settlement of Karachev destroyed a German tank landing force. On September 18—20 , during the battle for Nizhyn, the calculation with his fire destroyed about 90 German soldiers and officers, 8 machine guns , 2 mortars . On September 30, 1943, at a critical moment of the battle on the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper near the village of Rotichi of the Chernobyl district of the Kiev region , Karachev raised the fighters to attack, captured the enemy machine gun and pushed the enemy out of him, so that he could not surround the battalion and regiment headquarters. In the battle directly for Rotichi, Karachev’s calculation destroyed 20 German soldiers and officers, as well as 3 machine guns [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 17, 1943, Sergeant Pyotr Karachev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union for “successfully crossing the Dnieper River north of Kiev , firmly fixing the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper River and showing courage and heroism.” He did not manage to get the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal , because on December 19, 1943, he went missing in the Zhytomyr region (according to some sources he died) [1] .
A street in the village of Protichka of the Krasnodar Territory is named after Karachev [1] .
