Shelpinskaya (lip)

Shelpinskaya (formerly Shelpina [1] ) is a lip on the Murmansk coast of the Barents Sea [2] . It extends into the northern part of the Kola Peninsula [2] . Open to the north, protrudes into the mainland for 2 km [2] . The width at the entrance is 2.5 km [2] . The maximum depth is over 20 m [2] .

It is located 105 km east of the Kola Bay , near the village of Dalnye Zelentsy [2] . There are Shelpinsky islands in the bay [2] . Several small streams flow into the bay [2] . The lip is limited by the entrance capes Doschaty (from the west) and Shelpin (from the east) [1] .

The banks of the bay mainly consist of large (up to 70 m [2] ) granite [1] places of steep mountains [2] . Soil - shell [1] . The average tide in the Shelpin Bay is 4 m [2] .

At the beginning of the 20th century , a convenient anchorage was located in the bay [1] . On the bank of the bay there was a trading post with a steam-oil factory of a large Murmansk fisheryman Savin and a fishing camp of Murmansk industrialists [1] . At that time, on average, 114 tons of cod were caught annually, haddock to 32 tons [1] .

There are no settlements on the banks of the lip. Administratively, the bay is part of the Kola district of the Murmansk region of Russia .
