Biography
Yusuf I ibn Ismail was born in Granada in 1318. He entered the throne of Granada in 1332. He was a supporter of peace with Castile , who declared the Reconquista in 1327, but under pressure from the Marinid Sultan of Morocco, Abu al-Hassan, who sent his army to Andalusia, declared war on the Christians. However, the Marinid-Granada troops were defeated in the battle of Rio Salado in 1340 by Castilian troops with the support of the Aragonese and Portuguese, after which the Marinid troops returned to Africa, stopping the expansion of their lands in Spain, but retaining several fortresses there. A few years later, Yusuf I lost the rich possessions of Algeciras in 1344 and Gibraltar in 1349, but managed to return Gibraltar soon, since the Castilian king Alfonso XI besieging the fortress died of the plague on March 26, 1350.
In 1354, Yusuf I was stabbed to death by a madman in the Grand Mosque of Granada during the celebration of the end of Ramadan . The successor was his son Abu Abdullah al-Ghani bi-Llah Muhammad V.
