In the final round of the season, Juventus Turin defeated Regina 2-0, and thus secured the championship. However, at the same time, in May 2006, a major corruption scandal broke out in Italian football, the defendants of which were functionaries of several Serie A clubs, including Juventus and Milan, who finished second. As a result of the investigation, both of these clubs were punished, including the removal of tournament points in the 2005–06 season, and the Milan International was declared the winner of this season on July 26, 2006, which was third at the time of the end of the tournament. For Inter, this champion title was the 14th in history.
Corruption Scandal
The final distribution of seats in the standings of this season was significantly influenced by the decisions of the Italian Football Federation regarding the clubs that were involved in the corruption scandal that broke out in Italian football in the summer of 2006. As a result of investigating the facts of collusion between club leaders, as well as the existence of unlawful links between club management and representatives of the judiciary and officials of the football federation, the fault of four Serie A clubs - Juventus, Fiorentina, Milan and Lazio was proved (a similar investigation was subsequently carried out against Regina).
In its original form, the punishment included a review of the results of the 2005–06 season, the removal of teams from participating in European cups, and transfer to lower leagues. After reviewing the appeals, the penalty was significantly mitigated. It remained strict for Juventus Turin, who was deprived of all points scored in the 2005–06 season, and, accordingly, last year’s champion title, the club was also deprived of the Italian champion title of the previous season, and transferred to Serie B.
Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio remained in Serie A, they started the competition in the 2006–07 season with spectacle fines. Also, each of these teams received a penalty of 30 points according to the results of the 2005–06 season, which was reflected in their places in the final standings. “Fiorentina” and “Lazio” thus lost their places in European competition, and “Milan”, which because of the penalty dropped only one line of the tournament table, instead of the group stage, started the competition in the Champions League 2006-07 from the qualifying round.
