About the album
Compared with the previous album, Toto , on the second disc, the musicians presented more “hard” material. But, the compositions turned out to be gloomy, since shortly before recording, David Peich's mother died, which influenced the keyboard player himself, and, in turn, the lyrics [3] .
The disc was enthusiastically received by the fans of hard rock , they liked the songs “ 99 ”, “Mama” and “White Sister”, but the critics rather cool [1] [3] [4] . Reviewer William Rulmann of Allmusic noted that the musicians made virtually no attempt to find their own sound, and Hydra was completely unlike its predecessor. Compositions, in his opinion, were performed quite well, but they turned out to be insufficiently expressive, so Toto could not consolidate the success they achieved thanks to the release of their debut album. Rulmann also mentioned that the entire record rests solely on the single "99." However, the listeners indifferently accepted the song [1] . Billboard magazine, on the contrary, left a good review about the album. According to observers in the American edition, "All Us Boys", "99", "Mama" and "White Sister" are the best songs on the disc, and the team succeeded in writing Hydra lyrics [5] .
In the band’s homeland, the album stopped only at line 37, while in Norway it took 1st place [6] [7] . In the United States, he was awarded the golden status , and in Canada - platinum [8] [9] .
