History of creation and publication
At first, the author planned that the novel would take place in the United States [1] .
The novel was first published from July 2 to August 7, 1879 in the newspaper Le Temps. In the form of a book with a circulation of 28 thousand copies, published by Etzel on August 11, 1879. This novel (with 52 illustrations by Leon Bennett) together with the novel “ Five Hundred Million Begumas ” was included in the 14 “double” volume of “ Extraordinary Travels ” - it was released on November 17, 1879 [1] .
In Russian, the novel went out of print by Petr Petrovich Soikin in 1906.
Story
The book is divided into 22 chapters [2] .
The protagonist of the book is a young man named Jin Fo. He gathers his friends to inform them of his marriage. But suddenly an event occurs that crossed out Fo's plans.
Facts
- A more accurate translation of the word "Tribulations" from the title of the novel is "moral torment, torment."
- Literary critics point to the extreme one-sidedness of coverage of the peasant movement of the Taiping in the novel.
Films
Three films were made based on the novel:
- 1965 - the same name with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the title role [3]
- 1987 - Chinese-made film of the same name directed by Wu Igun with Chen Pacey, Rosalind Chao and Rolf Hoppe in the lead roles.
- 1998 - Bullworth , with Warren Beatty and Halle Berry .
