Biography

Initially, he devoted himself to legal career and in 1909 he defended his doctoral dissertation, after which he began studying music at the University of Graz , while playing alto in the orchestra of the city theater. Later, Grabner also studied in Leipzig with Max Reger , and then worked as his assistant. Since 1913 , Grabner has already taught music theory at the Strasbourg Conservatory , in 1919-1924. taught courses in theory and composition at the Higher School of Music in Mannheim , then at the Leipzig Conservatory , where his students included Herbert Albert , Hugo Distler , Miklos Rozha , Mark Lavry , and finally in 1938 - 1946 . at the Berlin High School of Music .

As a music theorist, he proved himself to be the successor of H. Riemann's functional theory . Grabner's book "Handbook of functional harmony" (1944, reprinted many times) is one of the most popular (in Germany) textbooks of harmony in the second half of the 20th century. He is also the author of textbooks on polyphony (counterpoint), musical form (“analysis”), ear training, organ-making.

Grabner’s composer’s legacy includes seven operas, compositions for symphony and brass bands, motets and other organ works, songs.
