John Mollo ( eng. John Mollo ; March 18, 1931 , London , British Empire - October 25, 2017 , Froxfield, Wiltshire , England [2] ) - British costume designer, as well as author of books on military history and uniform history. Twice winner of the Oscar for the best design of costumes for films - “ Star Wars. Episode IV: New Hope ”and“ Gandhi ” [3] .

Biography
John Mollo was born in London in 1931 in the family of Evgeny Semenovich Mollo, a native of Russia, (a military historian and collector) [4] [5] and Ella Klara Mollo (née Cokell) [6] . From an early age he became interested in European and American military uniforms and subsequently wrote several books on this topic. In the cinema came in the late 1960s as a technical consultant on the military-historical theme (the films " Nikolai and Alexandra ", " Barry Lyndon ", etc.). As a costume designer, John Mollo made his debut in George Lucas' fantastic film Star Wars. Episode IV: New Hope ”(1977, costumes of Darth Vader , infantrymen and other characters), for the work on which he received his first Oscar. The second Oscar went to him (together with the Indian costume designer Bhanu Ataeya ) in 1983 for the design of costumes for the biographical drama of Richard Attenborough - “ Gandhi ”.
Mollo's latest work as a costume designer was a series of military-historical television films (1998-2003) about the adventures of a fictional officer, Horatio Hornblower .
He passed away on October 25, 2017 from a complication arising from vascular dementia (central nervous system disorder) [7]
From 1956 to 1966 he was married to Margaret Ann Mollo (artist-decorator, nominee for the Oscar), the second time he married in 1968, Louise Alexander Mary Mary Pongach and lived with her until the end of his days.
John's younger brother - Andrew Mollo (born 1940) - military historian, designer and screenwriter (nominee for the BAFTA award).
