Player Career
He played as a point guard . He studied at the University of Maryland at College Park , in 1976 he was selected for the NBA draft by number 1 by the Houston Rockets team. He later played for the Golden State Warriors , Washington Bullets , San Antonio Spurs , Milwaukee Bucks and Seattle Supersonics . In total, the NBA spent 14 seasons. He was included in the 1st NBA rookie team ( 1977 ). Two times in a row he joined the 1st All-American National Team of the NCAA ( 1975 - 1976 ). In total, during his career in the NBA he played 928 games in which he scored 9951 points (an average of 10.7 per game), made 2151 rebounds , 6454 assists , 1273 interceptions and 73 block shots .
US Career
In 1974, Lucas won the bronze medal of the World Basketball Championships in Puerto Rico as part of the US national team . In 1975, he became part of the US national team champion of the Pan American Games in Mexico City .
Coach Career
After completing his career, he coached the teams Miami Tropics ( USBL ) (1992, 1993), San Antonio Spurs (1992-1993, 1993-1994), Philadelphia 76 (1994-1996), Cleveland Cavaliers ( 2001-2003) and the Nigeria national team (2009). In addition, he worked as an assistant head coach at the Denver Nuggets (1998-2001) and Los Angeles Clippers (2009-2010).
