After winning the FA Cup of the previous season , the club completed a five-year period without winning trophies and won the first trophy under the direction of Alex Ferguson . In the 1990/91 season, United achieved even greater success by winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup for the first time in its history, beating the Spanish Barcelona in the final match . It was the first season after the return of the English clubs to the European Cups after the completion of the disqualification imposed by UEFA in connection with the actions of Liverpool fans in the Eiselian tragedy .
At the end of the season, Hughes was named Player of the Year by the players , and young Lee Sharpe received the award for the best young player of the season . In the same season, Welsh winger Ryan Giggs , who was called the most talented player of the club since George Best , made his debut in Manchester United. Also, the new player was the last defender Denis Irvin , bought from Oldham Athletic for £ 625,000 at the end of last season. The main goalkeeper of the club was Les Seals , but at the end of the season he left the team.
This season, United for the second time in its history reached the Football League Cup final, but lost to Sheffield Wednesday club (its head coach was former Manchester United head coach Ron Atkinson ). In the championship, "United" improved its last year's result, ending the season in 6th place. The defense of the FA Cup ended in the fifth round after losing to Norwich City .
Ferguson Assistant Archie Knox left the team in the end of the season by going to the Rangers . His place was taken by Brian Kidd .
