Biography
Born on April 19, 1899 in St. Petersburg, graduated from the Tenishev School in 1916. After college he entered the Military Medical Academy . After graduating from the Military Medical Academy, he remained at the Department of Physiology, headed by Academician I. P. Pavlov , to prepare for the activities of a scientist. Entered the Petrograd University . For two years he was an assistant with Professor I. I. Zhukov at the Department of Physiological and Colloidal Chemistry. After 2 years, he was appointed junior teacher in the Department of Physiology at the Military Medical Academy, and 2 years later he became a senior teacher. From 1923 he worked at the Murmansk Biological Station . Participated in many scientific expeditions, was on a scientific mission in England and Norway in the years 1930-1931.
In 1933, after the closure of the Murmansk station, he moved to work at Orbeli in the department of evolutionary physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine . Then he opened the laboratory of comparative physiology and biochemistry at the Sevastopol Biological Station , which worked until World War II .
Academician E.M. Kreps died on October 4, 1985 in Yalta. He was buried at the Theological Cemetery in Leningrad. In 1985 he was posthumously awarded the USSR State Prize .
Scientific work
His scientific work was devoted to the problems of comparative physiology and biochemistry of the nervous system, as well as the study of the respiratory function of the blood. Established the fact of regulation of the activity of enzymes from the central nervous system. He was the head of work on the study of the features of the physiology of labor of divers and work on sea chemistry. Created methods to identify the relationship between the evolution of marine animals and the evolution of the animal world in general.

- Order of the Red Banner of Labor (06/10/1945).
- State Prize of the USSR (1985, posthumously) - for the series of works "The structure and function of lipids" (1965-1983).
- I.P. Pavlov Gold Medal (1982) - for a series of works on the evolutionary physiology and biochemistry of the nervous system, including the monograph "Lipids of Cell Membranes".
- Honorary Member of the Czechoslovak Medical Society. I. Purkin.
- Medal named J. Purkine Czechoslovak Medical Society.
