Biography
Born on October 22, 1936 in the village of Medina, in Slavonia (Croatia) in the family of Sava and Iulka Pavlovich. I finished secondary school in my native village, and my lower secondary school in Podravska Slatina .
In 1956, he graduated from the St. Savva Seminary at Rakovica Monastery, and in 1963 - the Theological Faculty of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade. After that, he continued his studies in Western Europe. He studied Protestant and Roman Catholic theology in Germany: at the Evangelical Academy in Schleswig and the theological faculty of the Hristian Albrecht University in Kiel . Then he studied Roman Catholic theology and Byzantology under Professor Beck at the University of Ludwig-Maximilians . Acquainted with the traditions of Benedictine monasteries in Belgium and Germany .
After graduation, he returned to his homeland. He was appointed teacher of the seminary in Prizren . Having stayed there in the 1966-1967 school year, he moved to the seminary of the Krk Monastery .
On November 18, 1967, Bishop Stefan of Dalmatia was tonsured a monk, the next day, in Bosnia Brachov, he was consecrated into a hierodeacon , and on March 2, 1969 in Kistani , into a hieromonk . At the same time, he acted as a teacher, chief tutor of the seminary and head of the seminary and monastic library, and he served as a parish ministry in the village of Biovičko and then in Kistanje.
According to the appointment of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, he was a member of the Commission for the transfer of sacred church objects expropriated during World War II and located in the Historical Museum and other cultural institutions in Zagreb. He participated in the meetings of the Commission of the World Council of Churches for Inter-Church Assistance, held on December 4, 1967 in Belgrade. Took part in international conferences.
On May 21, 1977, by the decision of the Sacred Bishops' Council, he was elected Bishop of Lepavin, Patriarchal Vicar. Hirotoniya held July 31, 1977.
In the same year he was appointed temporary administrator of the Zagreb-Ljubljana metropolis . Since 1982 - Metropolitan of Zagreb-Ljubljana.
In 1982-1992, he represented the Serbian Church in Geneva on inter-church assistance.
In 1982-1985 he was the administrator of the Slavonian diocese .
Since July 1989, he replaced the elderly patriarch of Serbian Hermann before being elected to the Primate's throne of Bishop Pavel (Stojčević) in 1990.
In 1990-1991 he was the administrator of the Gornokarlovatsk eparchy .
He was repeatedly elected a member of the Holy Synod, and presided over the Council of Bishops in the Pec Patriarchate in 1990, when the election of the Patriarch of Serbian Pavel took place.
By the decision of the Bishops' Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church dated May 20, 1992, he was elected Chairman of the Episcopal Council of the Serbian Church in Croatia. In this capacity, I signed with the Chairman of the Government of Croatia Ivica Racan the Treaty on the Relations of the Serbian Orthodox Church with the Government of the Republic of Croatia.
After the decision of the Council of Bishops of 1994 to expand the jurisdiction of the Zabreb-Ljubljana diocese to the territory of Italy, in connection with which his title was changed to "Zagreb-Ljubljana and the whole of Italy"; at the end of July 1994, he took over the spiritual care of the Serbian parishes in Trieste , Rome , Vicenza and Milan .
As a delegate of the Serbian Patriarch, he repeatedly visited the Vatican .
On May 26, 2011, by the decision of the Bishops ’Council, the territory of Italy became part of the newly formed Austrian-Swiss diocese , in connection with which the title“ Zagrebsko-Ljubljansky ”was returned to Metropolitan John.
He died on April 3, 2014 at 6.10 pm at the hospital in Zagreb [2] . He was buried on April 5 in the Transfiguration Cathedral of Zagreb [3] .
