Story

In this philosophical picture, the director’s thoughts on the opposition of internal and external beauty were reflected. The name of the film is symbolic and is translated as follows: the word “Satyam” means truth, the word “Shivam” can mean either the Lord God ( Shiva ) or eternal love, the word “Sundaram” means beauty in all its manifestations.

The action takes place in a small Indian village in which a young girl named Rupa lives with her elderly father-priest. When Rupa was very young, on her birthday she inadvertently burned her right cheek with boiling oil from a pan. Since then, the right side of the girl’s face has been disfigured and hidden under the cover of her sari . The father is much more worried not about his daughter’s health, but about the fact that no one wants to marry her and calls him the damned. Despite this, Rupa sincerely loves his father and takes care of him, remains cheerful and religious. Every morning, the whole village wakes up from the beautiful singing of Rupa, who goes to a Hindu temple and sings the prayer song “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” (“Truth, Love, Beauty”, literally: “Truth, God, Beauty”) to the glory of the Lord God and other religious songs.

An engineer comes to a village from the city to build a large dam - a young handsome man named Ranjiv. He loves beauty and cannot stand the slightest flaw. One day at dawn, Ranjeev hears Rupa’s beautiful voice singing a prayer, thinks she is very beautiful, meets her, but for some reason does not notice the mutilated part of her face. For some time, Ranjeev communicates with Rupa and falls in love with her, the girl reciprocates him. Ranjiv then asks permission from her father to marry her.

After the wedding, Ranjiv discovers the truth and thinks that he was deceived and forced to marry another. He renounces Rupa and drives her out of the house. Rupa decides to meet him at night, hiding the mutilated part of his face under the sari. Ranjiv spends his days hating his wife and nights, loving his mistress, not realizing that this is the same woman - his Rupa. During one of their nights together, Rupa became pregnant. When Ranjiv finds out that his wife is pregnant, he accuses her of infidelity. Rupa swears in the temple before God and all the villagers that the wife and the "lover" are one and the same person, but Ranjiv still refuses to believe her.

Suddenly, a devastating flood occurs in the village, sweeping away centuries-old trees and breaking the dam on which Ranjiv worked. During the evacuation of the villagers, Ranjeev hears familiar beautiful singing and goes to look for the girl who owns this voice. Seeing that this is Rupa's singing, Ranjeev understands how blind and unfair he was, and apologizes to her, admitting to her that he only now realized that his wife Rupa is the most beautiful woman in the world.
