Kievan mayor ( Ukrainian: Kyivan mayor ; razg. Mayor of Kiev ) - an elected post of the head of local government of the capital of Ukraine. The mayor is elected in local elections for a four-year term. The post of mayor was created after the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine in 1996 and the Law of Ukraine "On Local Self-Government in Ukraine".

After the Law of Ukraine “On Local Self-Government” was released on June 12, 1997, the status of the Kiev mayor was received by Leonid Kosakovsky , who previously held the post of chairman of the Kiev city council.
Currently, the mayor of Kiev is Vitali Klitschko [1] .
According to the law “On the capital of Ukraine - the hero-city of Kiev”, the Kiev mayor simultaneously served as the head of the Kiev city state administration. Alexander Omelchenko and Leonid Chernovetsky combined the positions of heads of representative and executive authorities. After the introduction by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in 2010 of amendments to the law “On the capital of Ukraine - the hero-city of Kiev”, the posts of the Kiev mayor and the head of the Kiev city state administration were divided.

Powers of the Kiev mayor
The powers of the Kiev mayor are determined by the law of May 21, 1997 No. 280/97-BP "On Local Self-Government in Ukraine" and the law of January 15, 1999 No. 401-XIV "On the Capital of Ukraine - the Hero City of Kiev".
- Participation in the preparation of draft laws of Ukraine, as well as acts of the President of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on issues of Kiev;
- Participation in resolving issues on city events of national and international character;
- Participation in meetings of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on issues relating to Kiev;
- Submission of projects related to Kiev to the President of Ukraine or the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine;
- Participation in resolving issues of the location of state bodies in Kiev.
Mayor Election
The Kiev mayor is elected by elections in accordance with the law of July 10, 2010 No. 2487-VI "On the election of deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, local councils and rural, settlement, city mayors."
According to the Kiev City Election Commission, Leonid Chernovetsky won the election in 2006, gaining 31.83% of the vote, Vitali Klitschko took second place with 23.7%, and Alexander Omelchenko took third place with 21.2%.
According to the results of the next local elections on November 16, 2015, Vitali Klitschko won in the second round of Borislav Bereza, gaining 65.5% of the vote and thus reelected to his post.
