Content
Use
Externally, the prayer with the sutra looks as if the sutra is an object of worship. Sutra is not an obligatory subject in prayer, but serves to protect the person praying from passersby. In the Hanafi madhhab, prayer is valid if a person goes before the worshipers [3] The stick, saddle, wall, pillar can be used as a sutra. It is forbidden to use gravestones as a sutra and others [4] .
Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad
- “If one of you wishes to perform a namaz, then he must commit it to the sutra and come closer to it” [5] .
- “Do not perform namaz so that there is no sutra in front of you” [6] .
- “If one of you wants to perform namaz, then let him set a sutra in front of him and come closer to it, for, truly, the instructor (shaitan) passes in front of him” [7] .
- “Let each of you place something similar (in height) to a camel saddle (in front of you), and then perform namaz” [8] .
- “When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the Ka'ba, he left a gap of three cubits between himself and the wall, then performed a namaz” [9] .
- “If one of you places something like this (in height) on the back of a camel's saddle, then makes a salat, then do not worry that someone will pass before this (that is, before the sutra)” [6] .
- “If there is something like a camel saddle in front of you, then whoever passes in front of you will not harm you (that is, your prayer will not break)” [10] .
- “If the one who passes before the worshipers knows the degree of sin that he committed, then he would prefer to wait forty (days, months or years) than go before him” [9] .
- “A woman, a donkey and a dog violate the prayer (if they pass before the worshipers) and this is prevented (by placing) something similar to the back of a camel saddle (in front of itself)” [6] .
- “A prayer is broken (by passing) a black dog or a woman with menstruation (that is, having reached puberty)” [11] .
