Book of General Misconceptions

The Book of General Misconceptions is a book written by John Lloyd to popularize the British television program QI . A series of similar books were later released. The "Book ..." contains a list of false facts that some people consider true.

Creation History

It was first published by Faber and Faber Publishing House in the UK on October 19, 2006 . In the USA - on August 7, 2007 by Harmony Books , in France - “Book ...” was renamed to"Les autruches ne mettent pas la tête dans le sable: 200 bonnes raisons de renoncer à nos certitudes" and was released on October 3, 2007 by Éditions Dunod .

In the year of release in the UK, the book was listed " Amazon's number one Global bestseller for Christmas 2006." [1] [2] By the end of January 2007, more than 300,000 copies were sold. Unexpectedly high sales motivated the authors to release a sequel , and then an annual.

In the United States, “The Book ...” received generally positive reviews from Publishers Weekly magazines [3] and the newspaper The New York Times . [four]

The book was in the top 15 of the New York-Times bestsellers from December 9, 2007 to January 13, 2008. [5] [6]

Structure

The Book of General Misconceptions contains a list of 230 questions, mainly those that have already appeared in QI . The questions are accompanied by the correct answer, as well as an explanation of why the proposed answer is correct. Sometimes assumptions are made why people are used to believing lies or various urban myths .

The book contains introductions by Stephen Fry and Alan Davis , the presenters of the QI program.

Criticism Reviews

Responses to the book as a whole were more positive. Critic Jennifer Kay wrote that "... the Book of General Misconceptions" will not make you feel stupid. It really is an appeal to be more curious. " [7] The New York Times, [8] critic of Doug Brown, [9] American newspapers Los Angeles Times , Monsters and Critics, were also positive , USA Today , The Seattle Times , Chicago Sun-Timesen and Seattle Post-Intelligencer . The pocket edition of the Book ... was released on April 3, 2008. [eleven]

The second book of the series - “The Book of Animal Ignorance” - was released in the UK on October 4, 2007, and in November 2008 the audio book “The Sound of General Ignorance” was released .

Since November 2007, the QI Yearbook has been published. [12]
