Pella

According to the Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos at the end of the 5th century BC. e. Bazileus (king) of Macedonia Archelaus of Macedonia ( 413 - 399 ) left the city of Egi, sacred for the Macedonians, and transferred the capital to Pella: on a plain and closer to the sea [1] . At the beginning of the IV century BC. e. Pella became the largest city in Macedonia [2] . The heyday of Pella, came at the end of the IV century BC. e., after the pan-Greek campaign of Alexander the Great to the East and with his successors. After the conquest of Macedonia by the Romans in the II century BC. e. Pella became the center of one of the 4 administrative districts of Roman Macedonia , but then the center was moved to the more conveniently located city of Thessaloniki , and the former capital of the Macedonians was abandoned. Excavations in the city began at the beginning of the 20th century, after the liberation and reunification of Macedonia with Greece, and continued intermittently from 1914 to 1957. Today, Pella, together with the ancient cultural and religious center of the Macedonians in Dion , the ancient capital of Aegis and the current administrative center of Thessaloniki, make up the historical and tourist Ring of Macedonia. As the famous Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronicos writes in his work “The Greek Treasure” ( Ελληνικός θησαυρός ) [3] :

Pella's earlier finds and the finds of Vergina, Dion and Sindh today, clearly radically changed not only our knowledge, but also the attitude towards the Macedonians and Macedonia, which was essentially an unknown, almost mysterious page in ancient Greek history.

Museum

The museum building was designed by the architect Costas Skrumpellos and is located on the archaeological site of the ancient city of Pella . The construction of the building was completed in 2009. The museum is located near the archaeological site of the ancient Macedonian palace. The building has a rectangular atrium , repeating the central peristyle of the ancient buildings of Pella. The information sector provides texts, photographs, maps, drawings and mock-ups of the archaeological site and a video film about Pella. At the entrance are two significant exhibits: a marble head, considered a portrait of Alexander the Great and a statuette of the Greek deity Pan . Pella's daily life is the first thematic group of the exposition. The most significant exhibits here are floor mosaics from the House of Dionysus and the House of Abduction of Helena. Excavation finds provide sufficient information about daily life in ancient Pella. Exhibits include remodeled furniture, layouts and clothing. The second thematic group covers the social life of Pella. The finds come from the excavations of the agora and are associated with the rule of the city (coins, inscriptions, sculptures), production and trade (vessels for transporting wine, terracotta figurines, equipment for the production of ceramics). The third thematic group consists of mosaics from the sanctuaries of Pella (the sanctuary of the Mother of the Gods and Aphrodite , from Tesmoforion ), and other finds, such as inscriptions, vessels, metal objects. The fourth thematic group is finds from the graves of the city. Burial finds cover the Bronze Age , the Iron Age , the geometric and archaic periods (9th – 6th centuries BC), classical (5th – 4th centuries BC) and Hellenistic (3rd – 2nd centuries BC) e.) periods. The finds also provide information on the language of the inhabitants of the city ( Dorian dialect of the ancient Greek language ), and on funeral rituals. The last group is the palace gallery, which provides information on the architectural form of the palace and on the life and personality of Alexander the Great [4] .
