The Kingdom ( Reign ) is an American television series created by Laurie McCarthy and Stephanie Sengupta [1] . In the center of the plot is the young Maria Stuart and her story of coming to power in France in 1557. The series appeared on The CW from October 17, 2013 to June 16, 2017 [2] .

Synopsis
The series tells about the events of 1557-59. The Queen of Scotland, Mary , has been hiding in a monastery since childhood. Bypassing the rivals, the villains who want her dead, the nuns help her. But the time comes to return to the castle and become not only the titled queen, but also the wife of Prince Francis, with whom the girl was engaged to a few years ago. This is a political union that should strengthen the position of Scotland. The basis of the entire royal life is composed of cunning plans and intrigues. The king sees marriage only as a way to get closer to another country and make his power even larger and stronger. The king has an illegitimate son who opposes this marriage. Moreover, Nostradamus predicted that marriage with Mary would cost Francis life. Catherine de Medici is doing everything to save her son. In addition, there are dark forces in the castle in the person of the illegal daughter of Catherine de Medici Clarissa, who also opposes this marriage. Residents are superstitious and trust magic.

Production
The CW Television Network bought the script for the pilot episode from Lori McCarthy at the end of October 2012 [3] , and on January 25, 2013 ordered the filming of the pilot episode [4] . Casting for regular roles began in February. The leading role was taken by Australian actress Adelaide Kane [5] , and then British actor Toby Rugbo was approved to play Dauphin Francis [6] . In March, Megan Fallows joined in the role of Catherine de Medici [7] .
The pilot episode is noteworthy in that it is the only drama on American broadcast television, which is completely filmed in Europe [8] . On May 9, 2013, the channel approved the pilot and ordered the series for broadcast in the 2013-14 season [9] [10] [11] . On February 13, 2014, the show was extended for the second season [12] . On January 11, 2015, the channel extended the series for the third season [13] , which started on October 9, 2015 [14] . On March 11, 2016, the series was extended for the fourth season [15] , which, as it became known on December 7, 2016, will be the last [16] ; The season premiered on February 10, 2017.
