Biography
Peteris Upitis was born on September 27, 1899 in the Kech parish of the Riga county (now the Amata Territory of Latvia ).
He studied in Malpils and Ersikskoy schools. He graduated from Valmiera Gymnasium (1919) and his first experiments in drawing refer to the same year. The young man continues to be engaged in artistic creativity and in 1932 he graduated from the Latvian Academy of Arts (graphics workshop of Richard Zarins ).
Consisted in the art section of the Latvian creative association " Green Crow " (1928).
He worked as a school teacher of drawing and art history (1929-1944), a teacher at the Department of Graphics of the Latvian State Academy of Fine Arts (since 1945). In 1945 he became a member of the Artists' Union of Latvia .
In 1946, he was appointed head of the easel painting department, which he headed until 1967. He also led a book graphics workshop, where among his students were well-known Russian artists of Latvia Nikolai Uvarov and Arthur Nikitin , and the latter, after graduating from the Academy, gave an unflattering characterization: If desired, he could become a practical artist, as well as perform well the public duties entrusted to him, however, he is very passive in public life ” [1] .
In 1963, Upitis was elected a professor at the Latvian Academy of Art. In the 1960s, he became interested in the ex-libris , subsequently creating more than 700 personal library signs and becoming the chairman of the ex libris section of the Voluntary Society of Book Lovers (1976-1985).
“By creating book signs to representatives of different nations and cultures, you can constantly keep yourself in shape, think, search, experiment, constantly update. This is important for any artist, ”the professor recognized.
Died on June 5, 1989 in Riga. He was buried at the Forest Cemetery [2] .
Creativity
Took part in exhibitions since 1955. He worked in different techniques, in the late 1930s he stopped at woodcuts. After World War II, the themes and execution of the work fit into the ideology of socialist realism . In later works, artistic comprehension of the theme of native nature prevailed, and there was a turn towards the poeticized Latvian landscape.
The most famous works are the cycles “Rural Country”, “Latvian Fishermen” (both 1947), “Renovation of Latvia” (1949–1950), “Lyrics” (circa 1948), “Field” (1946–1950), “Gauja” ( 1956-1981). About 700 bookplates belong to the authorship of P. Upitis, many illustrations to the works of Latvian and world literature. In 1943 he published the book Theodore Uders.
Works of Peteris Upitis were exhibited not only in the republics of the USSR, but also in Germany, France, Poland, Hungary. Finland, Portugal, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Norway, Canada and Japan [3] .
