Virginia Elizabeth "Gina" Davis ( born Virginia Elizabeth "Geena" Davis ; born January 21, 1956, Wareham, Massachusetts ) is an American actress, producer, screenwriter and former fashion model. She is best known for her roles in the films Mucha , Beatlejuice , Thelma and Louise and involuntarily Tourist , for the last of which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1989. Davis also played the role of US President Mackenzie Allen in the television series Woman President (2005-2006), which brought her Golden Globes in 2006. In 2019, in recognition of her work on gender equality, Davis received the Gene Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Early years

Gina Davis was born in , Massachusetts and graduated from Boston University in 1979, after which she moved to New York . In New York, Davis signed a contract with the modeling agency Zoli and worked as a model before making her television debut in 1982 [1] .

Career

Davis was spotted by director Sidney Pollack , who offered her a small role in the movie Tootsie (1982). Then in 1983, she got a regular supporting role in the short-lived sitcom Buffalo Bill, where the main roles were played by Dabney Coleman and Joanna Cassidy . In 1985, she got her first major role in her career, in the sitcom "Sarah", an attempt to repeat the success of the " Mary Tyler Moore Show ", but the series was closed after one season [1] .

After roles in the films “The Fly ” (1986) and “ Beetlejuice ” (1988), Davis received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film “ Willingly Traveling ”, to the surprise of many critics [1] . In 1991, she played in the movie Thelma and Louise with Susan Sarandon , for which she was nominated for an Oscar. In the following years, she starred in several commercially successful films, but in 1995 her career was actually killed by the role in the film " Cutthroat Island ", which was expected by a huge box office failure [2] . With a budget of over 100 million, he collected only 10 million and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most disastrous film of all time [3] .

On September 1, 2001, Davis married plastic surgeon Rezu Jarrahi [6] , they had three children: daughter Alize Keshwar (born April 10, 2002) [7] and twin boys Kian William and Kais Stephen (born May 6, 2004 ) [8] . On May 8, 2018, Jarrahi filed for divorce from Davis after almost seventeen years of marriage, indicating the date of separation on November 15, 2017, and the reason for the separation was “irreconcilable differences” [9] . Davis, in response, filed a petition in which she claimed that she and Jarrah had never been legally married.

Davis is a member of Mensa , a society of high IQ people [10] .
