In the first period of his activity, Martin Schaffner adhered to a realistic direction, wrote very characteristic portraits and even in religious paintings he gave physiognomy figures and costumes to his contemporaries, as, for example, in The Adoration of the Magi [1] .
Subsequently, after a trip to Italy , under the influence of local painters, he changed his old style to a more idealistic one and began to strive for beauty and nobility of forms and expression of spiritual moods, such as in four paintings of the Munich Pinakothek (“Annunciation”, “ The Presentation of the Lord ”,“ The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles ”and“ The Assumption of the Virgin Mary ”) [1] .
Schaffner's works were exhibited in Berlin, Augsburg, Stuttgart, Sigmaring, as well as in some private German galleries [1] .
