Biography
After graduating from school in Vologda, Vladimir Ivanovich entered the Higher Engineering and Technical School of the Navy in 1943. In August 1944, he voluntarily left to serve in the current Fleet.
In 1950, he graduated from Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute with a degree in oceanography. In 1953-1957 He worked as a senior fellow, director of Arctic research observatories in Pevek , Tiksi and Dikson . In the years 1957-1961. - Graduate student of the Arctic and Antarctic Institute . In 1961-2001 - Senior Researcher at the Ice Swimming and Ice Regime Research and Forecasting Departments.
Vladimir Ivanovich successfully defended his thesis, prepared for the defense of his doctoral dissertation. V.I. Smirnov is the author of about 100 scientific and popular science works and 4 monographs on marine hydrometeorology, Arctic ice research, and the study of ice swimming in the Russian and foreign Arctic.
V.I.Smirnov, in addition to 4 years of work in the Arctic observatories, participated in numerous expeditions on icebreakers and ships, and also participated in the scientific and operational support for navigation on the Northern Sea Route, twice participated in expedition trips to Canada on Soviet ships, on an expedition aboard the Vladivostok icebreaker to liberate the M. Somov "drifting in the ice of the Antarctic.
V. I. Smirnov took an active part in the public life of the institute, heading the institute organization of the Knowledge Society for more than 40 years, and enjoyed the well-deserved respect of colleagues and comrades.
V. I. Smirnov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, the medal "For Victory over Germany", the jubilee medals of the USSR Armed Forces in connection with the 30.60 and 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the medal "Veteran of Labor" , bronze medal of VDNH, departmental awards "Honorary Polar Explorer" and "Excellence in Hydrometeorological Services."
