Club career

Meyer began his career at the youth academy of the Oberhausen Rot-Weiss , from where he moved to Duisburg in 2004. In 2009, he became a player at Schalke 04 . In the 2011/12 season, together with the Schalke junior team U19, he became the champion of the Western Bundesliga, and later the Bundesliga, defeating Bayern in the finals (2: 1). In the 2012/13 season, he played for the same team in 15 matches, scoring 11 goals and 11 assists, and again became the champion of the Western Bundesliga.

In December 2012, Mayer signed the first professional contract with Schalke 04 until 2015 [3] . On February 16, 2013 he made his debut for the “ cobalt ” in the Bundesliga, replacing Raffael in the 72nd minute of the match against “ Mainz ” (2: 2) and scored an assist [4] . On May 12, 2013, Mayer made his debut in the Champions League in the second leg of the 1/8 finals against the Turkish Galatasaray (2: 3).

On May 7, 2013, Mayer extended the contract with Schalke until 2017 [5] [6] .

On November 30, 2013, he extended the contract with the club until 2018 [7] [8] . On May 4, 2017, Mayer announced that he would not renew the contract with Schalke [9] [10] .

On August 2, 2018, Maximilian Max signed the Crystal Palace club. The midfielder scored the first goal for the new club on January 19, 2019 against the Liverpool club.

Team Career

On November 11, 2009, Meyer made his debut as a member of the youth national team of Germany until the age of 15, coming on as a substitute in the 47th minute and scoring one goal [11] .

In 2012, Mayer went to the European Championships in Slovenia as a member of the German youth team under 17 years old , where he became the silver medalist, top scorer and best player of the competition [12] .

May 8, 2014, Mayer was in the expanded composition of the German national team for the World Cup in Brazil [13] . On May 13, he became one of 12 football players who made his debut in the national team in a match with Poland (0: 0). The next day, Mayer was unhooked from the final squad [14] .

In October 2014, he was first invited to the German youth team . Maier scored the first goal in its composition on November 13 in a match against the youth team of the Netherlands .

July 15, 2016 Max was included in the final composition of the German national team at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro [15] . In the match of the third round against the Fiji national team (10: 0), Mayer scored a hat-trick [16] . After Leon Gorecki’s injury in the first round match, Mayer became captain of the national team and won silver medals with her. On November 1, 2016, Mayer, like the entire national team, was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf [17] .

In early June 2017, Mayer joined the youth team for the upcoming European Championship in Poland [18] . Mayer took part in all five matches, and the team won gold medals. Max scored his only goal in the tournament in the first round against the Czechs (2: 0), becoming the best player in this match [19] . At the end of the championship, Meyer was included in the symbolic team of the tournament [20] .
