Anatoly Chernov was born on January 13, 1919 in the village of Gorelovo (now the Breitovsky District of the Yaroslavl Region ). He graduated from nine classes of school. In 1937, Chernov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1939 he graduated from the Perm Military Aviation Technical School. Participated in the battles of World War II. In 1947, in the rank of major, he was transferred to the reserve, after which he worked as a flight test engineer at the Tupolev Design Bureau . He participated in the testing of heavy bombers " Tu-4 " and " Tu-95 " [1] .

May 11, 1953 during a test flight on the "Tu-95" on the plane caught fire engine. Crew commander Alexei Flight and flight engineer Anatoly Chernov remained aboard, trying to put out the fire and land the plane. However, they failed to do this - the plane fell into the forest and exploded, both pilots died. The flight and Chernov were buried at the Vagankovo ​​cemetery of Moscow [1] .

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 4, 1954, for “courage and heroism shown in the testing of new aircraft technology, Anatoly Chernov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded two Orders of Lenin and a number of medals [1] .
