Biography
Wilhelm Wirtinger was born in Ibs-on-Danube . He graduated from the University of Vienna , where in 1887 he received a Ph.D. in mathematics [4] . Its supervisor was [3] . In his youth, Wirtinger traveled to Germany, and studied at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Gottingen [3] . In 1890, he was promoted to a habilitated doctor [3] .
In 1895, Wirtsinger became a professor at the University of Vienna, but in the same year he transferred to the University of Innsbruck named after Leopold and Franz [3] . In 1896, the scientist published a work on θ-functions , which received a positive reaction from leading mathematicians in the world [3] .
In 1905, Wirtinger returned to the University of Vienna. In 1907 he was awarded the Sylvester Medal , awarded by the Royal Society of London for his outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics [3] . In 1931, the scientist entered the Bavarian Academy of Sciences [3] .
Wirtinger has published over his life a large number of works (according to an article by Hans Honrich, there were 71 [5] ), affecting various branches of mathematics. So, the subjects of his research were algebra , number theory and elementary geometry [3] .
In his lectures, the scientist paid much attention to the historical context of the development of mathematics, and was also interested in its philosophical foundations [3] . Among Wirtinger’s students there were many people who later became recognized scientists: Wilhelm Blaschke , Leopold Fitoris , Eduard Helly , Olga Taussky-Todd , Kurt Gödel , , , and [3] [≡] .
Wilhelm Wirtinger died in 1945 in Ibs-on-Danube [3] .
