History
The Mikhailovskaya Column was installed in Izhevsk on the Market Square (later it became known as the Cathedral Square) and opened on November 8 in 1852 [2] at the behest of Emperor Nicholas I. It was set in honor of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich , who died three years earlier in 1849. Mikhail Pavlovich was the most August head of the military industry of the Russian Empire in general and the chief of Izhevsk arms factory in particular. The column was made of cast iron, on top of which they placed a bronze angel (angel of Izhevsk) with a cross in their hands [3] [1] . The inscription on the podium of the column read:
Unforgettable General Feldtseyhmester grateful subordinates
On the other side of the pedestal, the dates of the life of the Grand Duke were indicated.
The construction of the column was funded by the ranks and craftsmen of the Izhevsk Arms Plant , and its project was developed by the plant's architects, who were led by chief architect I. T. Kokovikhin. The column repeated the Alexander Column erected in 1834 in St. Petersburg .
Construction was carried out for 2 years. A column with a height of 10 fathoms was made from iron castings. The column was made so carefully that the joints between the castings could be found with great difficulty. The column was crowned with a statue of an angel with a height of 3 m. The height of the cross in the hands of an angel was 4 m. The total height of the monument was 28.3 m. The details of the monument were distinguished by meticulousness and elegance of workmanship. An openwork lattice of metal spears and gun barrels aimed at the ground was built around the monument.
Column and plaque at the base
The column was not far from the factory guardhouse, and public floggings were carried out there by the gauntlets .
After the October Revolution in 1918, the column was destroyed [4] . The cast-iron cannons, probably broken from the fence of the Mikhailovsky column, spent ten years abandoned on the bank of the Izhevsk pond around the monument to A. Deryabin . However, there is a version that these guns from 1812 had previously belonged to Arsenal.
The monument was restored only after almost nine decades, but there is no coincidence of the new monument with the original. The height of the monument is 19 m, the column almost over the entire height is lined with tiers consisting of three 120 ° -degree granite segments, and only the last tier is solid. The column is a cone, its diameter from 3-meter height varies from 1.6 m to 1.3 m at the top. An angel sculpture was re-cast, authored by sculptor Pavel Medvedev, and for the work he used the few remaining photographs [1] . The sculpture of an angel is turned in the opposite direction [5] . When assembling parts, only anchor joints were used without the use of mortar. In the manufacture of the pedestal were used 4 types of granite. Four crowned eagles on a pedestal are made by Alexander Dresvyannikov. The monument itself turned out to be in the courtyard of the State Russian Drama Theater and looks at the plant. A sign on the monument reads:
