Heikkinen was born in Sweden , but began his career in Finland in the club of the second division “OPS Oulu”. In 1996, he made his debut for the team, but at the end of the season he moved to the club of the TPS first division. In the first season, Marcus helped the team take fourth place. After that, he played for MyPa-47 for two seasons, but did not achieve much success. In 2000, Heikkinen moved to the capital “ HIK ” with which he won the Finland Cup in the first season, and two years later he won the championship . In 2003, Marcus on loan came to English Portsmouth , but played in only two matches, so in the same year he accepted the invitation of the Scottish Aberdeen . In Scotland, Heikkinen was a footballer in the main squad and in 2005 helped the team take fourth place in the championship.

In the summer of 2005, he signed a contract with the Luton Town Championship Club. In the 2005/2006 season, Heikkinen was recognized as the footballer of the year at the club [2] . After the relegation of the team in 1 league , Marcus moved to the Vienna Rapid . Already in the first season he won the Austrian Bundesliga .

In 2013, after 6 years in Austria, Marcus switched to the Norwegian Start . On August 25, in his match against Aalesund , he made his debut in Tippelig [3] . In the same match, Heikkinen scored his first goal for Start. In early 2014, Marcus returned to his homeland at HIK. In early 2016, Heikkinen joined AS Oulu . International Career

On January 4, 2002, in a friendly match against Bahrain, Heikkinen made his debut for Finland . He was one of Finland's best defensive midfielders. In 2010, after Hannu Tihinen ended his career, Marcus was transferred to the position of central defender. Heikkinen participated in qualifying companies for the World Championships 2006 , 2010 and the European Championships 2008 and 2012 . In 2011, he completed his career in the national team [5] .
