History

By the decision of the Executive Committee of the Tula City Council of Workers' Deputies dated March 14, 1967 No. 3t 39-10 in the square between houses No. 61 and 63 on Lenin Avenue , the stela "Tuliak - Heroes of the Soviet Union", who died during the Great Patriotic War, was inaugurated. Sculptor: S. S. Semenov, architects: N. I. Gromov and P. M. Zaitsev [1] . Immediately after the memorial are the All Saints Cemetery and the All Saints Cathedral .

In accordance with the decision of the Executive Committee of the Tula Regional Council of Workers' Deputies dated 09.04.1969 No. 6-294 and the resolution of the Head of the Administration of the Tula Region dated 11.12.1991 No. 71, the monument was recognized as a protected cultural heritage site of regional significance [1] .

In 2008, the memorial was overhauled and the territory of the adjacent square was reconstructed [1] . Since there is a registry office nearby, a swing for the newlyweds was installed in the park. The memorial is a traditional place of laying flowers. The mayor of Tula, Vladimir Mogilnikov, explained the concept of the new park: “When we, architects, and designers, thought about how to equip this place, when we interviewed citizens of different ages, we came to the consensus that this is a square , not a cemetery . We divided it into two zones. They made a mournful zone where we pay tribute and honor to the defenders of our Motherland, and in the other part of the square our future: children and newlyweds ” [2] . The square was decorated with a marble fountain in the shape of a five-pointed star [3] .

In 2019, another reconstruction was carried out. All the entertainment elements were removed - the newlywed bench, playground, as well as ornate lamps and benches. The composition of the whole square has regained its original message - sorrow for the fallen heroes [4] [5] .

Composition of the memorial

The ensemble of the monument includes [1] :

  • a slightly curved rectangular stela of concrete 4 × 15 m in size, on which marble tablets with the names of 84 soldiers — generals, officers, soldiers who died in the battles in the Great Patriotic War — are fixed; in the lower part of the stele, on both sides, in the inset technique, the inscription is made: "To the heroes of the Soviet Union — Eternal glory."
  • asymmetrically with respect to the stele, a female figure of Motherland 3.8 m high, made of metal using the punch technique with sheet welding, was installed.

In 2004, on the two sides of the central stele, additional granite steles were installed with the names of the Tula - Heroes of the Soviet Union who died after World War II, and full knights of the Order of Glory [1] .
