Biography

Kleber Daggio was born on August 12, 1914 in German Togo, the same month captured and divided by Britain and France, and belonged to the Kabye people, although in the press he was sometimes counted among the Nawde or Losso peoples. During the Second World War, he served in the British Army, and since 1945 he joined the French army and participated in hostilities in Indochina, and then in Algeria. By 1960, when Togo gained independence, Kleber Daggio was the only Togolese in the French army who possessed a high non-commissioned officer rank [1] . He returned to Togo to continue serving in the national army, was promoted to captain and became commander of the small Togolese guard (Garde Togolaise), the defense forces of Togo [2] . After the 1963 coup, he was appointed head of the military cabinet of President Nicholas Grunitsky . With the rank of lieutenant colonel, and then colonel, he remained the highest ranking military of the republic. After the coup on April 13, 1967, he headed the ruling Committee of National Reconciliation, also taking the posts of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense [3] . After his resignation until 1968, he was Minister of Justice, and in 1969 he retired and returned to his native Siu, where he took up the post of cantonal leader.

Kleber Daggio passed away in 1988 [1] . In 2006, the government of Fora Gnassingbe decided to honor the memory of the former presidents of the country, Silvanus Olimpio, Nicholas Grunitsky and Kleber Daggio. Then the Avenue Nouvelle Marche in Lome was renamed Kleber Daggio Avenue [2] .
