Biography
The son of the Ufa prosecutor M.D. Knyazhevich ; the elder brother of the Minister of Finance A.M. Knyazhevich and the vice-governor of Tauris V.M. Knyazhevich . Grandfather of Major General D.M. Knyazhevich . He studied at the Kazan gymnasium ; expelled in 1804 in the famous riot case:
The hospital warden Smirnov offended with abusive words and, it seems, hit one of the best state-owned inmates of Alexander Knyazhevich. His elder brother Dmitry, who was considered the first student in all respects, was already a sixteen-year-old, extremely ardent young man and the most tender brother, dearly beloved by all, lost his temper and, backed by the general sympathy and assistance of his comrades, leading a crowd of high school students, and their there were about 80 people, went to the hospital, took by force, but without any offense, under the arrest of the hospital overseer and locked him in the Council room.

Arriving in 1805 in St. Petersburg , the young Knyazhevich soon began to take part in a friendly circle of science and literature lovers ( Alexander Izmailov , Alexander Benitsky , Mikhail Milonov , Nikolai Grech , Mikhail Lobanov , etc.). In 1814 (under the command of E.F. Kankrin ) he was sent abroad for settlements with the Allied governments for the food of the Russian troops. Living in Germany , Dmitry Knyazhevich studied the German language and took part in some Viennese publications.
Returning to Russia, he held important positions in the Ministry of Finance. In 1837 he was appointed trustee of the Odessa educational district. Thanks to him, the Richelieu Lyceum was reorganized: in 1838, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry was re-established; introduced the teaching of forensic medicine , political arithmetic , geodesy , comparative geography , Russian antiquities; in 1842, a whole faculty was created - cameral. Law and mathematics departments also received a new organization.
Dmitry Knyazhevich participated in the works of the Society of Agriculture of Southern Russia , founded the Society of History and Antiquities in Odessa in 1839, and was unanimously elected its president. In 1841, traveled with scientists and educational purposes, the Danubian principalities , Transylvania and Hungary , Italy to Naples , the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea , drove into Serbia , Bohemia , Saxony and Prussia . The result of the trip was a rich collection of antiquities, coins, manuscripts and old printed books. In 1844, Dmitry Knyazhevich died on the road to St. Petersburg, where he was taking his draft charter of the Novorossiysk University.
Literary activity
The literary activity of D. M. Knyazhevich began in the collection "Flower Garden" of 1809 and 1810, the "St. Petersburg Bulletin" of 1812 and the Journal of Competition of Enlightenment and Beneficence, where he placed philological studies on synonyms of the Russian language. His articles were also published in Well-intentioned.
In the years 1820-1821 he released the "Gift for Christmas time." In 1822 he published the Complete Collection of Russian Proverbs and Sayings. In 1822 and 1823 he published literary additions to the " Son of the Fatherland " - "Library for Reading", which housed mostly translations of German novels. In addition, Knyazhevich published articles in The Polar Star (1824) and The Nevsky Almanac (1825).
In 1837 he was elected a member of the Russian Academy and participated in the compilation of the Russian language dictionary. When he was a trustee of the Odessa educational district, Dmitry Knyazhevich wrote a kind of pedagogical book, "Programs for teaching all subjects in grammar schools and in district and parish schools." Since 1837 he published and edited the "Leaflets of the Society of Agriculture of Southern Russia". In 1839 and 1840 he published two literary collections under the title "Odessa Almanac", and the "Novorossiysk Calendar". Compiled and edited the first volume of "Notes of the Society of History and Antiquities in Odessa".
