Initial Biography
Grigory Ivanovich Karizhsky was born on November 21, 1895 in the village of Fitinino, now Kotovsky District, Volgograd Region, into a peasant family.
He graduated from six classes of junior high school.
Military Service
World War I and Civil War
In May 1915 he was drafted into the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army . In 1917 he graduated from the school of ensigns . In November 1917 he was demobilized from the army with the rank of ensign.
In February 1918 he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army and was appointed assistant commander of the Revolutionary Committee of the city of Kamyshin , in April - as the commander of the company of the general military training of the Kamyshin RVK, in September - to the position of the company commander of the 1st separate Tsaritsyn cavalry squadron, and in January 1919 years - to the post of squadron commander of the Kamyshin cavalry regiment. He fought on the Southern Front against troops under the command of General A.I. Denikin .
In 1919 he joined the ranks of the CPSU (b) .
In July 1920, in a battle near the village of Bolshoi Tokmak, Karizhsky was wounded and captured, but fled the same day. By a resolution of the PBC of the RSFSR for heroism in battles in 1920, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner .
Interwar
In March 1921 he was appointed assistant commander of the 29th cavalry regiment of the 5th cavalry division .
In 1922 he graduated from the Taganrog Higher Cavalry School , and in 1924 - from the Leningrad Higher Cavalry School .
In June 1924 he was appointed assistant commander for the economic unit of the 30th and 25th cavalry regiments of the 5th cavalry division, in October 1927 - to the post of chief of staff of the 76th and 92nd cavalry regiments in the North Caucasus military district , and in December 1932 - to the post of commander of the 88th cavalry regiment of the 12th cavalry division .
In February 1938, Karizhsky was dismissed from the ranks of the Red Army under Art. 43, p. "B" and was under investigation by the NKVD . In December 1939 he was reinstated in the ranks of the Red Army and was appointed to the post of chief of economic supply of the 18th Mountain Cavalry Division .
In January 1940, Karizhsky was again dismissed from the ranks of the Red Army under Art. 43, p. "A" and was under investigation by the NKVD, but in March 1941 he was released, reinstated in the Red Army and was appointed deputy commander of the 12th Infantry Division of the Far Eastern Front .
World War II
In July 1941 he was appointed to the post of commander of the 32nd , then - to the post of commander of the 202nd airborne brigades of the Far Eastern Front, and in August 1942 - to the post of deputy commander of the 15th Army in the same place.
Since May 1944, Major General Grigory Ivanovich Karizhsky was a student of the tactics course of the Higher Military Academy named after K.E. Voroshilov , after which from August of that year he was at the disposal of the Military Council of the 3rd Belorussian Front .
In September he was appointed deputy commander of the 36th Rifle Corps . From November 13 to December 1, 1944, he temporarily served as commander of the corps, who occupied the defense at the turn of the city of Gumbinnen - the village of Goldan - the city of Darkeman . He took part in the Belarusian and Gumbinnen-Goldap operations .
In December 1944, he was appointed commander of the 18th Guards Rifle Division , which participated in East Prussian and Insterburg-Koenigsberg operations . The division distinguished itself in January 1945 during the liberation of Insterburg . For the successful conduct of the battles of the division, the honorary name Insterburg was awarded. Continuing the offensive, the division approached the Frishes-Huff Bay (10 km south of the city of Königsberg ), liberated the city of Brandenburg and, along with other formations, the city of Königsberg .
On April 10, 1945, the division entered the Zemland Peninsula and entered into battle with the enemy on the Frishes-Nerung Spit , and on the night of May 1, 1945 completed its rout. For exemplary performance of command tasks in battles during the capture of the city of Koenigsberg, the division was awarded the Order of Suvorov, 2nd degree. For courage and courage, skillful command of the division Karizhsky was also awarded the Order of Suvorov 2nd degree.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 5, 1945, Major General Grigory Ivanovich Karizhsky was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal (No. 5372) for the exemplary command of the division and the personal courage and heroism of the guard.
Post-War Career
With the end of the war, Major General Karizhsky continued to command this division. In December 1945 he was appointed commander of the 30th Guards Mechanized Division (the city of Königsberg).
In 1948 he graduated from advanced training courses for officers at the Military Academy of the Armored and Mechanized Forces of the Soviet Army named after I.V. Stalin .
In March 1955 he was appointed to the post of assistant commander - chief of the combat training department of the headquarters of the 6th Army ( Northern Military District ), and in March 1957 - to the post of deputy commander of the same army for combat training.
In July 1958, Major General Grigory Ivanovich Karizhsky went into reserve. He lived in Kiev . He died on February 5, 1971 . He was buried at the Darnitsky cemetery .
