Biography
Born in the region of Lika , in Serbia . In 1779 he moved to Russia and entered the Leib Hussar squadron ; in 1780 granted by ensign and cavalry guard . In 1786 - a lieutenant; in 1789 promoted to captain; On November 22, 1790 he was released from the Cavalier Guard corps into the army, but on December 5 of the same year he retired with the rank of second major .
Having accepted Russian citizenship, on January 9, 1791 he entered the Saratov Zemsky Court as a prosecutor, then in 1792 he was transferred to the Ufa province and promoted to college assessors . Since 1797 - Kazan provincial prosecutor; in 1798 he received the rank of court adviser and the Order of St. Anne ; since 1800 - college adviser . On September 27, 1801, Knyazhevich was removed from his post and put on trial, but 4 years later, on May 16, 1805, he was reinstated.
In the years 1810-1812, M. D. Knyazhevich, with the rank of state adviser, served in the Kazan Treasury as a wine and salt bailiff. The Kazan house of the Knyazhevichs was distinguished by an inscription above the gate: “Good people, we ask for favors!” The inscription in length and size of letters did not fit, and therefore it was written as follows: “D. L. You are welcome. ” Reading the letters in the old way, that is, “Good People”, it turned out almost the same meaning as would be expressed in the full inscription [1] .
He died in 1813 in Kazan and was buried in the city cemetery. According to the testimony of S. T. Aksakov , who knew him, Knyazhevich “ could be called a faithful type of Southern Slav and was distinguished by cordiality and hospitality; although his appearance and methods, with his huge growth and sharp features, at first seemed harsh and strict, but he had a most kind heart ” [1] .
While still in military service, in the 1780s, Knyazhevich married Elizabeth Alekseevna Rudneva (d. 1842). They had four sons: Dmitry , Alexander , Nikolai , Vladislav . S. T. Aksakov in “Memoirs” tells how the eldest sons of Knyazhevich in Ufa taught him to “beat walnuts with his forehead” [1] .
