History of origin
For the first time, move 2. c3 met in the game G. Popert - G. Staunton (London, 1841). Later on move 2. c3 was not very popular, although it was repeatedly met in games of that time. The starting point for 1. e4 с5 2. с3 was the tournament in Vienna (1898), where one of the participants was Semyon Zinovievich Alapin , who played several interesting games on this topic. After this, move 2. c3 in the Sicilian defense was often associated with the name Alapin. A considerable contribution to the development of this system was made by Nimzowicz , Tartakower . With the rearrangement of moves, the position from option 2. c3 was encountered in the game Capablanca - Chernyak (Buenos Aires, 1939) and in the duels between Alekhine and Podgorny and Foltys (Prague, 1942).
