Biography
Stepan Kalinin was born on November 25, 1923 in the village of Pokrovka, Abdulinsky District, Orenburg Region . After finishing seven classes of the school he worked on a collective farm . In November 1941, Kalinin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since January 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By the summer of 1944, Sergeant Stepan Kalinin commanded the detachment of the 433rd Infantry Regiment of the 64th Infantry Division of the 50th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the crossing of the Neman [1] .
On July 14, 1944, the commander of the battalion, in which Kalinin served, sent a group of fighters to the western coast of the Neman in order to divert the attention of German troops, and at that time successfully transport the main forces in a more favorable place. Under enemy fire, only seven people were able to get alive to the west coast in the area of the village of Lunna, Mostovsky district, Grodno region , who captured a small bridgehead and repulsed German attacks. Over the next day, the group repelled 12 counterattacks, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. In that battle, Kalinin was injured, but continued to fight. The participants of that battle Osinny , Sheremet , Nichepurenko , Maidan , Solopenko , Sukhin and Kalinin were presented to the ranks of Heroes of the Soviet Union [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “courage and heroism shown in crossing the Neman and holding the bridgehead on its western shore,” Sergeant Stepan Kalinin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 8278 [1] .
After the war, Kalinin was demobilized. He lived in Kuibyshev , in 1961 he graduated from the Kuibyshev Aviation College. He died on March 8, 1987, was buried at the Rubizhne cemetery in Samara [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
