On December 15, 2011, the Democratic Party teamed up with the small United Civil Party, thereby forming the United Democratic Party , whose activities relied heavily on the alliance with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions . The formation of the party took place against the backdrop of the upcoming parliamentary elections in April 2012, in which the center-left opposition sought to defeat the ruling Senuri party [5] [6] .

At the party’s first congress on January 15, 2012, the United Democratic Party elected Khan Myonsuk as chairman of the party’s Supreme Council [7] . Khan Myungsuk was the first female Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea from 2006 to 2007. As chairman, she promised to tackle the abuses committed in the state during the reign of Lee Myung-bak [8] .

On May 4, 2013, the United Democratic Party decided to adopt a new name and henceforth be called the "Democratic Party", and Kim Han Gil became the new leader of the party [9] .

On March 16, 2014, the Democratic Party teamed up with the Coalition for New Politics, thereby forming the Democratic Coalition for New Politics [10]
