He was portrayed as a ram-headed man with spiral-twisted horns. The relationship between Khnum and Amon is observed during the reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III , when the celebration of both deities was held on the same day - on New Year's Day ( Egypt. Wp-rnpt ) [1] .

Origin

Khnum - in ancient Egyptian mythology, the god of fertility, the son of Nun ; his sacred animal is a ram, with the head of which he was portrayed.

In Elephantine, one of the titles of Khnum was " Lord of the sky, who sits on a high throne " [1] .

Cult

Khnum was revered as the lord of cataract , the leader of the fertile spills of the Nile [1] . On his orders, the god Hapi raised the water level in the Nile every year.

Khnum made a man of clay on a potter’s wheel and was involved in the birth of some gods ( Hapi , Renenutet , Heka ). Also, the deity at the birth of the royal baby β€œgave health to his members” and created Ka for him [1] .

It was part of the Elephantine triad (Khnum, Satis and Anuket ), but veneration of Khnum was widespread throughout Egypt and in Nubia . The centers of worship are Elephantine and Leontopol .

The holiday of Nehebkau was celebrated at the beginning of the Sowing season (prt), coinciding with the holiday of Khnum and the New Year. Probably the New Year ( Egypt. Wp-rnpt ) in Elephantine was celebrated in the temple of Khnum. Given that Khnum was Ba for Ra (its night form), it is acceptable to take New Year's Day as the birthday of Khnum-Ra ( Egyptian rite αΊ–nm itn ) at dawn in the form of Khepri / Ra-Khorakhte [1] .

Tradition

According to one legend, the scholar and sage Imhotep - a dignitary and architect of the pharaoh Djoser (III millennium BC) - in connection with a seven-year famine, advised Djoser to make a rich offering to the fertility god. Pharaoh followed this advice, and Khnum appeared to him in a dream, promising to free the waters of the Nile. That year, the country received a wonderful harvest.
