Biography

Voldemar Valdmanis was born on September 16, 1905 in the village of Khoroshovka in the Tambov province (now in the Lebedyansky district of the Lipetsk region). Brother - artist Vilis Valdmanis (1906-1980).

He graduated from the Cesis Art and Craft College (1924), studied at the painting workshop of Ugi Skulme (1924-1927).

He worked as an assistant artist at the Workers' and National Theaters (1928-1933), as a decorator of the Latvian National Theater (1933-1940), the People's Theater (1941-1944), the Drama Theater (1944-1946), and the main artist of the Riga Film Studio (1946-1947) ), director of the Museum of Soviet Art of the Latvian SSR (1940-1941).

He was a member of the art association " Green Crow ", a member of the Union of Artists of Latvia (since 1944). People's Artist of the Latvian SSR (1963).

He died on December 11, 1966 in Riga, was buried in the Forest Cemetery [2] .

Creativity

He took part in exhibitions since 1928. He worked in watercolor, also engaged in poster art and book graphics.

The most famous scenographic works: the Latvian National Theater (Drama Theater) - “The Noble Nest” by Ivan Turgenev (1932), “The Son of the Fisherman” by Vilis Latsis (1934), “Crazy Baron Bunduls” Jekaba Zeibolta (1935), “ Windsor Mockers ” by William Shakespeare (1936), “On Fire” by Rudolf Blaumanis (1940), “How the History was Made in the Harpeters” by Arvid Grigulis (1946). National Theater - “The Prodigal Son” of Rudolf Blaumanis (1942), “The Melancholy Waltz” by Vilis Lapeniek (1944).
