Biography

Alexander Shatrian was born on December 18, 1826 in Falsbourg .

He worked as a teacher when in 1847 he met with Emil Erkmann, who at that time had already tried his hand at journalism by publishing the pamphlet Le recrutement militaire . Having approached, the following year they entered the literary field, under the common pseudonym Erkmann-Chatrian ( FR. Erckmann-Chatrian ) [4] , with a number of short stories later collected in Histoires et contes fantastiques (1849). Then came the dramas Georges and L'Alsace en 1814 , the short story Schinderhannes , the novel Les brigands des Vosges , the first edition of the later highly acclaimed L'illuster docteur Mathéus (1859). The success of this work gave the authors the opportunity to publish their previous works in the collections Contes fantastiques (1860), Contes de la Montagne (1861), Maitre Daniel Rock (1861), Contes des bords du Rhin (1862), " Les confidences d'un joueur de clarinette " (1860) [5] .

Then they conceived to convey the history of France over the past century in a number of fiction works, where the fate of the homeland would be reflected in the personal destinies of not outstanding figures of history, but inconspicuous people, even those who did not seem to be its creators. Thus were written " Le fou Yégof " (1862); Madame Thérèse ou les Volontaires de 1792 (1863); " Histoire d'un conscrit de 1813 " (1864); Waterloo (1865; these novels were compiled under the title Romans nationaux ); La guerre (1866); Le blocus (1877); extensive “ Histoire d'un paysan ” (1868–70, 4 tons); " Histoire du plébiscite, racontée par an des 7500000 oui " (1872); " Le brigadie Frédéric " (1874); Une campagne en Algérie (1874); Souvenir d'un chef de chantier à l'Isthme de Suez (1876); Alsace (1881); " Le banni " (1882). The works written during the second empire were such an ardent protest against its system, against Napoleonic legend and Bonapartism , so vividly reproduced the era of the French heroic struggle for their rights that the government vainly struggled with their enormous spread and propaganda influence [5] .

At the same time, authors, well acquainted with the life of the French, especially Alsatian, village, depicted her life, customs and transmitted her traditions to Ami Fritz (1864); " Histoire d'un homme du peuple " (1865); La maison forestière (1866); Histoire d'un sous-maitre (1869); Maître Gaspard Fix (1876); Contes vosgiens (1877); " Le grand-père Lebigre " (1880); " Les Vieux de la Vieille " (1881). In addition to these fiction works, they wrote: “ Lettre d'un électeur à son député ” (1872); Quelques mots sur l'esprit humain (1S80); " L'art et les grands idéalistes " (1885) [5] .

Alexander Shatrian died on September 3, 1890 in the capital of France.
