Etymology

The name of the village comes from the Udmurt folk form of the baptized name Athanasius - Ofon, Opon . This is also evidenced by the old Udmurt name of the village - Ponyap "( repair of Afanasyev’s son" [1] .

Another outdated name of the village - Povosta - is the Vyatka dialectic meaning a churchyard - a church with a cemetery surrounding it [3] , around which the village began to form.

History

The village was founded by the Udmurts, who settled up the Chepets in the 17th century and mastered its northern tributaries by the beginning of the 18th century . In the census of 1710, almost all existing settlements south of Ponin are fixed as repairs (that is, based within a few years before the census) [4] .

Trinity Church at the beginning of the 20th century

In 1745, by decree of Archimandrite Sylvester, governor of the Kazan office of the newly-baptized affairs, it was ordered to build a wooden church in the village of Poninskaya in the name of Archangel Michael [5] . The church was consecrated on June 19, 1750 . In 1816, the stone Trinity Church was built (only the refectory has survived to this day).

In the second half of the 19th century, the village became a major shopping center - a district highway passes through it to the village of Zyuzdino-Afanasyevo . In Ponino, two fairs were held annually, gathering peasants from all over the district and from neighboring volosts - winter and summer, dedicated to Ilyin’s day .

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were two primary schools in the village - Zemstvo and parochial.

By 1915 there were three shops in the village, an agricultural partnership was organized.

In April-June 1919 the village was on the front line of the Civil War and for some time was occupied by white troops rushing to Vyatka .

In 1935 - 1956, the village was the center of the Poninsky district , allocated from the Glazovsky district in order to disaggregate.
