History

In the Roman period, the settlement was known as the Samaritan village of Ginae .

Yakut al-Hamawi in the XII century described Jenin as "a small beautiful city where there are many sources."

In the Ottoman period, Jenin was the center of the same name Nakhiya (district), according to the census of 1596, there were 8 households in it. In 1882, the population was about 3 thousand, 2 families were Christians, the rest were Muslims.

In 1922, the population was 2,637 people, of whom there were 7 Jews, 108 Christians, 215 Indians and Sikhs, the rest were Muslims. The city gained notoriety in the 1930s , when Palestine was under British control . In the summer of 1938, a local Arab killed a British colonial official in Jenin. The gunman suspected of the murder was captured and shot "while trying to escape." Nevertheless, the British authorities decided that as a punishment "a large part of the city should be burned out." On August 25, 4,200 kilograms of explosives were delivered to Jenin for these purposes. During the operation in Jenin, the British forced the local Arabs to move ahead of their soldiers in those areas that were considered mined. This method was practiced everywhere as soon as the slightest suspicion appeared that there could be mines nearby.

In 1996, Arab American University was established near Jenin, and in September 2000 began to study students.

In 2002, during the Israeli military operation “ Defensive Wall ”, during the battles in the Jenin refugee camp , statements by the PNA about the “massacre” committed by the IDF in Jenin, about hundreds and thousands [3] of dead - “mainly civilians” appeared . According to the latest estimates of the PNA, Israel, the UN and HRW, between 52 and 57 people, including women and children, died during the fighting on the Palestinian side. The Israelis call the city "the center of Palestinian terrorism " [4] , and the head of " Tanzim " two weeks after the 9/11 attacks - "the capital of suicide bombers" [5] .
