Airplane
The Tu-104B with tail number 42503 (factory - 021901, serial - 19-01) was released by the Kazan Aviation Plant on November 24, 1960 , and on December 19 transferred to the General Directorate of the civil air fleet , which sent it to the Tbilisi Aviation Division of the Georgian Territorial Department of the Civil Air Fleet. Initially, the airliner had a cabin with 100 seats, but was later converted to 115-seater. The total operating time of the 13-year-old airliner was 18,300 flight hours and 10,983 takeoff-landing cycles [1] .
Crew
The flight crew (in the cockpit) was from the 112th (Tbilisi) flight squad and consisted of four people [2] :
- The commander of the aircraft is Udaltsov Efim Grigorievich - Hero of the Soviet Union , holder of the Order of Lenin , three orders of the Red Banner , the Order of the Badge of Honor and the Order of the Patriotic War, I Degree .
- The co - pilot - Zapari Davydovich Kapanadze
- Navigator - Yevgeny M. Lobanov
- Mechanic - Solodovnikov Yevgeny Mikhailovich
Three cabin crew worked in the cabin [2] :
- Meshidze Lidiya Stepanovna
- Taurelia
- Gatsarelia Nukzari S.
Catastrophe
On that day, the board 42503 had to perform two flights on the route Moscow - Kutaisi - Moscow . At 12:25 the plane took off from Moscow and landed at 14:35 safely in Kutaisi airport [2] .
Then the crew had to make a return flight on the same plane - No. 964 (Kutaisi — Moscow). At 15:41, Tu-104 flew out of Kutaisi. But during the flight at 17:18, the dispatcher of the Western sector contacted the crewRDS Voronezh and reported that the weather in the Moscow air zone is below the minimum, in connection with which the crew must choose a spare airfield . The crew chose Mineralnye Vody , where he landed at 18:37. There aboard got a few more passengers with tickets to Moscow. After improving the weather in the Moscow zone, the crew received permission to take off. At 20:43, flight 964 departed from Mineralnye Vody and, after climbing, took an echelon of 8400 meters. In total, there were 68 passengers on board: 66 adults, 1 child, and the accompanying police officer (not included in the crew) [2] .
The sky over Domodedovo at that time was overcast with clouds with a lower boundary of 180 meters, there was haze, and visibility reached 3 kilometers. At 10:02 pm TU-104, after traversing Efremov, entered the Moscow air zone, after which the crew, as instructed by the dispatcher, began to descend to a height of 3,600 meters in the direction of Venev . Then the crew contacted the circle dispatcher and, at his resolution, at 22:23:23 he took the height of the circle 400 meters, and a minute later (22:24:27) he began to perform the third turn, being 16 kilometers from the airport. After completing the third turn and approaching the fourth point, the crew at 22:26:16 requested permission from the dispatcher to perform the fourth turn, for which he received the answer: "It's too early, one minute . " But after 32 seconds, the dispatcher himself instructed the crew to make the fourth turn, which he did, after leaving the turn in 1000-1500, to the left of the track. At 22:27:37, the dispatcher conveyed: “delete 7, stay to the left, go with this course,” so the crew tried to correct lateral evasion, and at 22:27:45 reported on the entrance to the glide path and that it was ready for landing at the same time, 6 kilometers from the end of runway-1 with a magnetic landing course of 137 ° (right) [2] .
Upon further flight to the DPRM , the plane began to divert to the right, and the DPRM was passed to the right 100 meters. Then the crew tried to rectify the situation, but the BPRM was already left 60 meters to the left. After this, the crew began to return the airliner to the track line, starting with a roll of 10-15 ° right dovorot, which led to a significant angular deviation of 10-15 ° to the right when passing the axis line between the BRM and the runway. Then the pilots made a fatal mistake - they began to perform a steep left turn, during which the roll reached 30-45 °. With a low vertical speed, 135 meters from the end of the runway and 25 meters to the right of its axis, the left wing plane caught the ground. because of what partially collapsed, including the left aileron . Continuing to decline, the Tu-104 collided with the ground of the front landing gear , which tore out of the niche. Then the plane reached the runway, hit its cover with the front landing gear, nose section of the fuselage and radar fairing, and then began to collapse. The nose part of the fuselage was torn off, the left part of the wing separated and the left landing gear broke. The main part of the fuselage stopped at 340 meters after the butt of the runway and to the left of its axis at 220 meters, after which it caught fire and was almost completely destroyed by fire. The nose stopped 62 meters further and avoided a fire [2] .
5 crew members died in the crash, except for co-pilot Kapanadze and flight attendants Meschhidze, who received serious injuries, as well as 7 passengers. Later in the hospital 4 more passengers died from wounds. A total of 11 passengers (3 men and 8 women) died in the crash and 41 were injured, 5 and 2 of the crew members, respectively [2] .
Causes of disaster
The cause of the catastrophe is the wrong decision by the ship’s commander, expressed in an attempt to land instead of go- around after taking the plane to the BPRM area with lateral evasion, which later, when correcting the approach, created excessively large rolls at low altitude and the left wing touched the ground the subsequent destruction of the aircraft.
