Dominosa Omnibus [1] [2] [3] (domino solitaire [4] , the task of reproducing the location of dominoes [5] , “Dominosa” [6] , “Solitaire Dominoes” [1] , “Domino Hunt” [1] ) is a set of 28 dominoes laid out in the form of a certain figure, the borders between which are erased. The challenge is to mark where which bone lies.

Description

Usually use a 7 × 8 rectangle shape. The decision is based on the fact that the squares with points 2, 3 and 6 can form a bone in only two directions. For points 2 and 3, this is true, because sets of dominoes are made so that in a vertically arranged bone a line of two and three points goes from the right top to the left bottom of the box.

There is an option with numbers on the bones instead of dots, in this case, generally speaking, a square can form a bone with all four of its neighbors, which complicates the puzzle. To facilitate it, for example, an 8 × 8 square is used as a figure, two squares are removed from the center of each side of which. In this case, some squares, having more than two neighbors, can form a bone in only two directions, because otherwise in an enclosed area bounded by marked bones, there will be an odd number of unmarked squares.

Martin Gardner describes the puzzle [5] :

I got a wonderful domino puzzle from Lech Pianovsky, a film critic from Warsaw ...

Any number of players can play it, but we assume that there are two of them. Each proceeds as follows. While the enemy is not in the room, he shuffles the standard set of 28 dominoes, points down, and randomly forms a 7 × 8 rectangle from them. Then the dice are turned over and the numbers on them are transferred to the 7 × 8 table, but the arrangement of the individual bones is not shown ... Players exchange tables, and the one who first guesses how to reproduce this arrangement of numbers with dominoes wins. Since there are several solutions for many options for arranging numbers on a 7 × 8 grid, it is not necessary to reproduce exactly the original arrangement of bones - it is enough to match the arrangement of numbers in the table.

History

There is evidence that the puzzle was known before . Thus, according to the testimony of Michael Mendelssohn [1] [3] , in the fourth edition of the booklet “Sperrdomino oder das alte Dominospiel zu zweien und Dominosa - neue Dominospiele zur Selbstunterhaltung”, published in Germany in 1924, it is stated that the puzzle was invented by O.S. Adler in 1874, patented in 1893 (German Reichs-Patent-Nr 71539) in the name of Richard Osa (pseudonym O.S. Adler ) and first published by Adler in 1894 under the name "Dominosa" (but reportedly bad sold because it was still unknown). Under the name “Dominosa Omnibus,” the puzzle was included in the Kürschners Jahrbuch almanac in 1899, and in 1912 the first edition of the booklet “Sperrdomino und Dominosa” was published by Verlag der Züllchower Anstalten in the district of Szczecin .
